  • Project for Empty Space (PES) is a multidisciplinary arts organization committed to creating inclusive, equity-centered cultural programming. Its work spans exhibitions, artist residencies, public art initiatives, subsidized studio spaces, and professional development and granting opportunities. PES prioritizes social discourse and amplifies narratives that have been historically marginalized or erased, aiming to address inequity by supporting artists whose practices confront issues of visibility, justice, and community. The organization remains dedicated to both reflecting on overlooked histories and imagining more expansive futures.

Under Rebecca’s leadership, alongside Co-Director Jasmine Wahi, PES has experienced significant growth. In the past five years, the organization has expanded to nearly 50,000 square feet and increased its annual operating budget by over 400%. Rebecca oversees the organization’s robust residency and studio programs and has co-founded several community-centered initiatives that extend PES’s mission. Among these is Body Freedom for Every(Body), a mobile exhibition platform presenting more than 100 artists whose work focuses on body autonomy.

Rebecca also played a key role in developing Newark Grounds with the City of Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Newark City Parks Foundation, the  Arts and Education District, among many other partners. This cultural corridor activates downtown Newark through a walkable public arts path that links more than 75 artworks and creative spaces, strengthening the city’s cultural landscape.

  • Rebecca is a co-creator of BODY FREEDOM FOR EVERY(BODY), a dynamic, multi-part program celebrating bodily autonomy, reproductive justice, queer liberation, and trans joy. The initiative began as Abortion Is Normal, an urgent, action-driven exhibition organized by a collective of cultural practitioners to raise awareness and support for accessible, safe, and legal abortion. The project was organized by Marilyn Minter, Laurie Simmons, Gina Nanni, and Sandy Tait, launching at a time when reproductive rights were under acute attack in the United States.

Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the program evolved into BODY FREEDOM FOR EVERY(BODY), broadening its focus to celebrate all aspects of bodily autonomy and agency. The program includes a traveling exhibition on wheels, an accessible digital database, and static exhibitions, all emphasizing choice, identity, and healthcare access.

The mobile exhibition truck traveled nearly 10,000 miles across the country, wrapped in Barbara Kruger’s iconic Your Body Is A Battleground, first debuted at the 1989 Women’s March on Washington. The 2024 tour included twenty stops across New York, New Jersey, Washington, DC, Iowa, Missouri, California, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida, reaching thousands of visitors directly and hundreds of thousands in transit. The work will continue in 2026.
