Gateway Project Spaces is a hub for multidisciplinary creative engagement. The three-level facility is split between a highly competitive and curated residency program, a project-based gallery in collaboration with Project For Empty Space, and rentable artist studio/ work spaces.

GPS originally opened its doors in 2012 as a pop-up exhibition space as a collaboration between New York based non-profit Project For Empty Space and Newark based Solo(s) Project House. These temporary shows transformed an otherwise inactive office space into an immersive contemporary art arena for the public to enjoy. In 2015, Gateway Project Spaces formalized its presence by renovating and expanding its footprint and scope of work to include creative workspaces and a new gallery space.

The purpose of the Gateway Project Spaces exhibition space is to host socially engaging exhibitions and community programs to cultivate critical social dialogues. It achieves this mission through bold exhibitions, community programming, and support of artists that creating work for social change. The exhibition space is co-directed by Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Jampol, two curators dedicated to activism, justice, and strong multi-disciplinary art.

Gateway Project Spaces gallery space is a subsidiary of Project For Empty Space, a 501c3 non-profit arts organization.

Gateway Project Spaces is home to nearly 60 artist studios and shared spaces for creative professionals.

The purpose of the Gateway Project Spaces Studio program is to cultivate a multidisciplinary artist community that can ultimately benefit all residents. A diverse array of studio practices will not only enhance and inspire the GPS tenants, but also lead to a wider audience of patrons, collectors, clients, and enthusiasts from all different areas.

The overall facility includes a plethora of amenities, including; direct indoor connection to Newark Penn Station (PATH, NJTransit, LightRail etc.), Platinum Wired Certified High Speed WiFi, 24 hour access, 24 hour security, temperature control, free professional development programs, bi-monthly visiting professionals (critics, curators, and collectors), open studios and networking events, access to photo and video facilities, special pricing for event spaces, access to and visibility from the Gateway Project Spaces, and much much more.
